James from Bayline Carpentry runs through a recent project in Rye, Victoria he’s completed, featuring Ekodeck’s Designer Series Decking in Leatherwood.
Working in the Bayside and surrounds of Melbourne, James has ventured out on his own in the last few years, so we spoke to James about his experience as a carpenter using Ekodeck composite decking.

You mentioned you’ve been working for yourself for a couple of years now, what kind of projects do you do?
I do all types of projects since being on my own – like renovations, framing, door installation, weatherboards, screen/walls, and much more. I’ve had to expand my repertoire to include more areas outside of just decking, which has been a great experience.
How long have you been using Ekodeck?
I’ve been using Ekodeck for about 3 years now. I’ve seen a big transition away from timber as clients just don’t have the time to maintain a timber deck nowadays.
Do you have any tips or tricks you’ve found helpful in your time installing Ekodeck?
Getting the framing right is a key factor to make sure that you’ll be smooth sailing once you start laying the Ekodeck boards. The other tip would be to not have too much wastage, and to use the most out of a board you can – in both big and small areas.
What would be your advice for other tradies looking to lay Ekodeck composite decking for the first time?
My advice would be to make sure you’re watching tutorials and wrapping your head around the install, especially with framing and different designs. The videos on the Ekodeck website help a lot!
Do you use any other composite decking brands?
No, I don’t use any other composite brands. I use Ekodeck mainly because of how easy it is to order, as it is at every Bunnings Warehouse, plus the customer service at Ekodeck is second to none! The sample kits you send out are great, too – they really help the customer make a decision on which colour boards they want to go with. Looking forward to many more Ekodecks to come!
