For this deck renovation, the existing patio simply wasn’t cutting it for the client’s large, active family. With a small footprint, the original space felt cramped and disconnected from the rest of the spacious backyard. That’s where Sean from Decks Plus Sydney came in—with a vision to expand, enhance, and elevate their outdoor living experience.
Sean developed a custom design that extended the entertaining area well into the backyard, creating a generous new deck and pergola structure that seamlessly flowed from the home’s interior. The goal was to make the transition between indoors and outdoors as natural and cohesive as possible.
For the decking, Sean selected Ironwood from the Designer Series range of Ekodeck composite decking. The design incorporated breaker boards and Edge Boards for a professional finish and visual contrast, and this helped define the structure within the expansive outdoor space.
A key design consideration was to maintain architectural continuity with the house itself. As the steps descended from the main living area to the deck, Sean took inspiration from the home’s lining board and mirrored the look using Ekodeck’s Castellated Panels in Carbon. This created a striking visual line that grounded the deck and tied it back to the house.
The home’s colour palette—Jet Black, Monument, Woodland Grey, and White—informed every material and colour choice Sean made. These tones were carried through the new structure, ensuring the new addition felt like an intentional extension, not an afterthought.
When asked why Sean chose Ekodeck for this project, he told us that he generally uses Ekodeck for most of his composite decking projects as he’s the most familiar with Ekodeck, as well as its popularity and availability at his local Bunnings Warehouse.
