A common occurrence during building or landscaping works is paint splashing in places it shouldn’t, and nothing is more devastating than getting some rogue paint spots on your brand-new Ekodeck composite deck.
Unfortunately, there isn’t just one answer on how to clean up paint off Ekodeck – it all depends on what type of paint has spilled on your new composite deck.
There are two main paint types – water-based or acrylic paints and oil-based paints.
Water-based or acrylic paints will dry the quickest, but are also the easiest to clean off.
Oil-based paints take longer to dry than water-based paints, but they are traditionally more durable and harder to remove.
It’s best to clean up any paint spills off your Ekodeck decking while the paint is still wet, using whatever cleaning product or solvent the paint manufacturer recommends to clean up wet paint with, but we know that this is not always possible.
You may not realise there’s some paint splattered onto your composite deck until it’s too late and the paint has dried, so we’ve conducted some testing using a variety of solvents and paint cleaners to see what works the best to clean up paint spots off Ekodeck composite decking without damaging the boards.
Most acrylic or water-based paints can be cleaned up with some soapy water or methylated spirits when still wet, and oil-based paints can be cleaned up with turpentine when wet.
Once the paint has dried though, you may need something tougher to clean up any paint drops – we’ve found that acetone works the best, but there are slightly different cleaning processes depending on which range of Ekodeck decking you’ve got installed.
When cleaning paint spots off Ekodeck Classic boards, rubbing over the dried paint spots with acetone and a clean microfibre cloth will remove the bulk of the paint. You may need to finish off by sanding over the area with some 40 grit sandpaper, as the paint can get embedded in the grain of the board.
For the Designer Series decking, acetone and a microfibre cloth, followed by a General Clean outlined in the Designer Series Care & Maintenance Guide below will remove any paint splatter.
One of the advantages of the Designer Series decking is the DurashellTM wrap which surrounds the composite core, making the Designer Series much more stain-resistant, less porous and less absorbent than the Ekodeck Classic decking.
The cleaning process for our Flame Fighter boards is the same as the Designer Series decking – acetone and a microfibre cloth, followed by a General Clean should do the trick for any paint spots on these boards.
