Knowing how to finish the edges of your new Ekodeck Essentials composite decking is important so you can get a professional and complete looking deck.
Unlike the Designer Series and Summit Series composite decking ranges, the Ekodeck Essentials decking does not come with a pre-finished Edge Board.
Instead, to finish the edges of your deck using Ekodeck Essentials, you will need to create your own edge board.
Before you start, you will need some basic tools to complete the job:
- A table saw, OR
- A circular saw (with a guide)
- A good quality hardwood or composite saw blade (60-80 teeth)
- 10g countersunk stainless steel decking screws
- Drill driver
We recommend picture framing in most decking installations if the deck is seen from the side to hide the cut grooved ends of the boards.
With Ekodeck Essentials, to create the cleanest and finished edge, it is also recommended to picture frame the outside of your deck and to have at least one fascia board running across the side/front of the deck.
To make your own edge and fascia boards for your Ekodeck Essentials, you will need to cut the groove off both boards as outlined below:
To cut the groove off, you have a couple of options on how to do this – you can use either a table saw or a circular saw with a guide.
No matter which tool you select to cut the groove off, ensure that you set your depth accurately so you don’t cut off more board than needed.

Once the grooves have been cut off on both the picture framing and fascia boards, you can set out both boards on the joists to create a shadowline finish, as shown below:
There are a few different ways in which you can fix the fascia boards to the joists, see below:
– Face fix through the boards
– Hidden angle bracket back screwed to the board
– C-Clip holding the bottom groove
You can see that we used face-fixing screws to fix the fascia boards in our installation.
Please ensure that if face-fixing any edge or fascia boards, you pre-drill a slightly oversized hole to allow for the natural expansion and contraction of Ekodeck as a composite decking product.
When fixing most of the picture framing and fascia boards, it is recommended to do this first, then you can start installing the rest of your boards from this point, moving in towards the house or wall.
